Description: Under Curator supervision, maintain collections of whole zooplankton samples, identified specimens, sorted materials, and data records. Develop and maintain computer databases of holdings. Process approved loan requests. Supervise and train visitors, students, volunteers and limited employees. Advise researchers and graduate students on the best techniques and selection of material. Prepare exhibits and make presentations to the public. Assist with grant proposal preparation and special projects. Sort, identify and carry out morphometric analysis of zooplankton. Coordinate cruise preparations. | December 2009 Heal the Bay is a nonprofit
environmental organization dedicated to making Southern California
coastal waters and watersheds, including the Santa Monica Bay, safe,
healthy and clean through research, education, community action and
advocacy. Position Summary: The Staff Scientist is responsible for marine and coastal resources related technical and policy projects for the organization. This consists of providing written comments and testimony on various issues including the impacts of power plants and desalination on marine resources; establishment of marine protected areas; local coastal planning; coastal aquatic resource protection including wetlands and riparian habitat; and coastal industrial uses. The Staff Scientist will also help forward ongoing coastal resources projects, such as the implementation of marine protected areas, and advance policy recommendations before various local and state agencies. The Staff Scientist will also represent Heal the Bay at public and stakeholder group meetings. This position requires a strong technical background, and experience in the policy arena is preferred. Candidates must be motivated, articulate and strong problem solvers. This is a full time salaried position with health, dental, vision and vacation benefits. The Staff Scientist reports to the Director of Coastal Resources. Functions Include:

| 4 Nov 2009 The California Ocean Science Trust (OST)
is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation established
pursuant to the California Ocean Resources Stewardship Act of
2000 to encourage coordinated, multi-agency, multi-institution
approaches to translating ocean science to management and
policy applications. The Marine Protected Areas Monitoring
Enterprise was launched in 2007 under the auspices of the OST
to lead development of efficient, cost-effective monitoring of
the statewide marine protected areas (MPA) network being
established under the Marine Life Protection Act. The MPA
Monitoring Enterprise, which is supported by the Ocean
Protection Council and works in partnership with the Department
of Fish and Game, has two new job openings, for an Assistant
Scientist and a Knowledge Manager. Both positions will be based
in Oakland, California, in the offices of the OST. Start date
for both positions is as soon as possible, preferably by March
